Residential & Lightning Fast DSL/
Is DSL a Good Fit for you or Your Company?

Over the past few years many companies have continually trumpeted their achievements in rolling out digital subscriber line (DSL), a technology that allows existing telephone lines to be used simultaneously for telephone and high-speed Internet traffic. Even with low levels of marketing, the companies have had difficulty keeping up with demand for the service.

Subscribers' experiences with the services have been mixed. As more customers come on line, complaints about spotty service and recurring outages have become common. In an effort to gain market share, many "DSL" companies have sold the service below cost resulting in poor customer service and bankruptcies. In spite of the promise of DSL, the technology has been hampered by false starts, poor installation and announced deals which have yet to come to fruition. Many consumers have complained about long waiting periods to have the coveted service installed, while many others have been disappointed to find out they live too far from the phone companies' equipment to get DSL at all. DSL is sensitive to distance.

There are also the issue of the different flavors DSL are offered in, such as ADSL, HDSL, SDSL, etc. Which one is right for you depends on your needs. One will limit or have different upload and download speeds, while the other will have the same upload as download. The second issue, of course is reliability.

With all that said, DSL can be a great fit for some companies. If your business is using the Internet primarily for emails and web surfing, then DSL may be a great fit for your company, but if your company is using the net in a "mission critical" fashion, such as hosting your own web servers or mail servers and many file transfers, then a dedicated connection (fractional point to point T-1) is definitely in order. Sometimes DSL can replace expensive multi-state Wide Area Networks using VPN (Virtual Private Network).
